About The Rose & Crown
Palo Alto's bar oldest bar, first Craft Beer bar and all around fun hangout spot.
The Rose & Crown is a bar in Palo Alto, California. It is listed at 547 Emerson St, Palo Alto, CA 94301, which places it among the local businesses of Palo Alto that residents and visitors turn to when they need this kind of service close by. Google also lists it under pub, which is worth knowing if you are comparing several options in the area.
This group covers the non-Asian restaurants, cafes, bars and food businesses that also appear in a mixed-cuisine food scene, including American diners, pizza, Mexican food, burgers, steakhouses and bakeries. Standard US restaurant norms apply: lunch and dinner service with a quieter stretch between, cards and tap-to-pay accepted almost everywhere, and a tip of 15-20% customary for table service. Fast food and quick-service counters expect payment up front and tipping is optional. Bars check ID for anyone who looks under 30, and the drinking age is 21 nationwide. Many restaurants in this group take reservations online through third-party platforms, while casual and fast-food spots are walk-in only. Sales tax is added at the register on top of the menu price and varies by city and state, so the final total is usually a few percent higher than the posted prices suggest.
The business lists hours on 7 days of the week. Typical hours are 2–11 pm. As with most places, expect changes around holidays; the phone number below is the fastest way to confirm. The listed phone number is (650) 327-7673. Many businesses also reply to text messages on the same number if it is a cell phone. More information is available on its website, therosepa.com.
Customers rate it 4.3 out of 5 on Google across 1,085 reviews, placing it among the better-regarded bars & pubs in Palo Alto.
Palo Alto is in California, on the West Coast, where the climate ranges from foggy coast to hot inland valleys, wildfire season can affect air quality in late summer, and traffic is the main thing to plan around. US addresses list the street number and name, then the city, state abbreviation and ZIP code, and Palo Alto follows the same pattern; a suite or apartment number such as Ste 200 refers to a unit inside the building. The map link on this page shows the exact spot.

I split my time between the Bay Area and London, and the Rose & Crown is the best way for me to feel like I'm back in Ladbroke Grove, while still keeping me grounded in California. The food is great. I get the deviled eggs, the wedge salad, and the fish and chips, and they're all delightful. The best thing on the menu, though, is the burger. I get the double, and I will fight anyone who says that it's not the best burger in the Bay Area. And that includes San Francisco. The staff are great. Helpful and attentive, but always on their terms, which I rather like. Darien (I'm not sure I'm spelling his name correctly) is exceptional. He knows a lot, has opinions that I respect, and shares when appropriate. He's also the de facto "bouncer" of the Tuesday-night trivia, which brings me to my last comment. Their trivia nights are the pinnacle of trivia nights, not only in the Bay Area, not only in California, but in the U.S. I've honestly never participated in a better one. The questions are tough, the moderator is all business, and the competition is stiff. I don't know that I've ever been there with fewer than 20 teams, and I've never left having anything but a great time.

I can’t really speak on the food, I was only here last Sunday on a date for a brief amount of time. One drink and I knew I was in a position I’d never experienced and got scared because the date got extremely aggressive. I wasn’t sure what to do because we were tucked away in the back and no customers were around. I got up to go to the ladies room and was just terrified and not sure what to do. This man, a fellow Stanford parent who was also there for graduation, physically hurt me. It felt like it was not real. I made eyes at the bartender, I later found out was the manager, Sikundar. I didn’t say a word just made a distressed look. He followed me to the bathroom and I quickly told him I wanted to leave but my purse was on the table and I didn’t know what to do. He sent me to the restaurant’s office, watched the security camera and showed me the man leaving, offered me kind support and got me in an uber, walking me there safely to the car. I hardly remember much of our conversation because I was so upset and scared. I do know this man got me out of a situation I’d never in my life been in and I’m incredibly thankful. When I return to Palo Alto I’ll definitely stop by again…. Alon

Fantastic pub. Hard to find a proper pub in the Palo Alto/Menlo Park area that isn’t trying to be sleek and fancy, and this is a great place with great food, great beer, and 2 real dart boards. My wife and I love coming here to play darts and have a drink after a dinner in downtown Palo Alto.

This is a classic pub located in a university area. We stopped by after an evening class on Thursday night for a quick catch-up with friends. The atmosphere was exactly what you’d expect from a typical pub, lively, a bit loud, and full of people hanging out and having fun. There wasn’t any loud music, though, which made it easier to talk. The food is very much standard bar fare - mostly fried items and casual pub-style dishes. Nothing particularly outstanding, but it fits the setting. The bartenders were fine and efficient, though nothing especially memorable. I ordered a fish sandwich since I was quite hungry, and it was actually pretty decent. The lettuce inside was fresh and the sandwich was satisfying. Most of the other food items were the usual deep-fried snacks that people often enjoy with drinks. I also tried one of their draft beers, which was good. It wasn’t the best I’ve had, but they do offer a wide selection, so there’s plenty to explore. Overall, it’s a solid spot if you’re looking for a casual pub atmosphere near Stanford campus.

This is a classic pub that we hangout with friends on a Friday night. The dart is great to enjoy. Most of the time, the place is very crowded and you might need to wait in the line. But like any great place, this is normal and it is worth waiting a bit to get our drinks. It is location wise very close to the other pubs and clubs so you can have your first drinks here then jump somewhere near. Happy to know this amazing pub💯
